What is this scythe costume prop?

This scythe costume prop is a plastic grim reaper sickle that measures 32.3 in (82 cm) long and 13.6 in (35 cm) across when assembled, and it weighs 3.52 oz (100 g). The curved blade has a distressed silver-black finish, the black shaft is spiral-wrapped, and a studded cap finishes the bottom end.

It comes as four pieces that twist together by hand: the blade head, two shaft sections and the end cap. The robe or cloak is not included.

How big is it next to a kid, teen or adult?

It is a handheld prop, not a floor-length staff. With the end cap on the floor, 32.3 in reaches about hip height on most adults, so grown-ups usually hold it at their side or across the body for photos. On a child around 4 ft (122 cm) tall it stands to about the lower chest, which makes the blade look big and dramatic.

If you picture a reaper whose blade towers over their head, this prop won't do that. Test the pose you have in mind against the 32.3 in length before the event.

The two skull models are close in size and differ mostly in finish. The green model is the compact, kid-focused option with a faint glow. Our grim reaper costume guide walks through which one suits which costume.

How do you put it together?

  1. Twist the two shaft sections together.
  2. Screw the blade head onto the top of the shaft.
  3. Add the studded end cap at the bottom.
  4. Hand-tighten each joint until snug; no tools are needed.

Reverse the steps to store it, and keep all four pieces in one bag so the small end cap doesn't go missing before next Halloween.

How to style the reaper look

  • A black hooded robe or cloak, with the hood pulled forward to shadow the face.
  • Black gloves, so the silver-black blade is the only thing catching the light.
  • For a demon reaper without a hood, add black glitter horn clips at the hairline.

After the costume comes off, the scythe works as a display piece by a doorway or party table. Pair it with a stretch spider web with two spiders for a small haunted-house corner.

Who should pick a different prop?

  • Anyone who wants a scythe taller than they are.
  • Anyone who wants contact play. This prop is for posing, not swinging, hitting or play fighting.
  • Anyone who wants a glow effect; the green model is the one for that.

Rules for costume props vary by school, haunted attraction and convention. Check them before you go, using our checklist on bringing props to conventions and events.

Frequently asked questions

Is this scythe big enough for an adult grim reaper costume?

It is a handheld size, 32.3 in (82 cm) long. On most adults it reaches about hip height, so it reads well held at the side or across the body, but it will not tower over your head like a floor-length scythe.

Can kids carry this scythe prop?

Yes. It is sized for kids, teens and adults and weighs just 3.52 oz (100 g). Keep play to posing and photos rather than swinging or play fighting, and help younger kids with assembly.

How does the scythe come apart?

It twists into four pieces: the blade head, two shaft sections and a studded end cap. Twist them back together by hand before the event; no tools are needed.

Is the blade real or sharp?

No. The whole prop is plastic, including the curved blade. It is a costume and display piece, not a tool.

Is the robe or costume included?

No. You get the scythe only. Pair it with your own hooded robe or cloak.

How is it different from the 33 in skull scythes?

This one is slightly shorter at 32.3 in and its look centers on a distressed silver-black blade and a spiral-wrapped shaft with a studded end cap. The 33 in models feature a sculpted skull at the head.

Can I use it as a Halloween decoration?

Yes. It works as a static display piece by a doorway, on a party table or in a haunted-house corner when it isn't being carried.
