  • Compact 28.5 in (72 cm) length with a 13 in (33 cm) green blade
  • Faint green glow after strong light; no LED or batteries
  • Hollow plastic, 4.2 oz (119 g), easy for kids to carry
  • 3 pieces: 1 sickle top + 2 black poles that screw together
  • Small parts: not for children under 3

What is this glow-in-the-dark scythe?

This glow-in-the-dark scythe is a compact, hollow plastic prop that measures 28.5 in (72 cm) assembled and weighs 4.2 oz (119 g). The curved blade is fluorescent green and spans 13 in (33 cm); the handle is two black poles. One sickle top and two poles screw together into one prop and come apart for storage.

The green blade glows faintly after you hold it under strong light. There is no LED, battery or switch.

How bright is the glow?

Expect a soft green glimmer in a dark room, not a light source. Charge the blade under a bright lamp or in sunlight just before heading out, and recharge it between stops if you can, since glow-in-the-dark finishes fade as they give off their stored light. In normal lighting the vivid green color carries the look on its own.

If you searched for a light-up scythe, this isn't one; it has no electronics.

Who is the 28.5-inch size for?

It is sized with kids in mind. On a child 3.5 to 4 ft (107 to 122 cm) tall it reaches around the waist to lower chest, a comfortable size for small hands to carry and plant for photos. Adults can carry it too, as long as you want a compact handheld accessory; on most grown-ups it reaches the upper thigh.

Choking hazard: small parts. Not for children under 3 years. Treat it as something to pose and parade with; it isn't made for hitting or contact games.

It is the shortest of our scythes and the only one with a glow finish. Adults who want a bigger skull look can step up to the 33 in black skull grim reaper scythe, and the grim reaper costume guide compares all of them.

How do you set it up?

  1. Screw the two black poles together by hand.
  2. Screw the green sickle top onto the upper pole.
  3. Charge the blade under strong light if you want the glow.
  4. After the event, unscrew the three pieces for storage.

The costume, flashlight, storage bag and any display props you may see in photos are not included.

Halloween night ideas

  • Kid grim reaper: a black hooded robe makes the green blade pop in both daylight and dusk.
  • Photo spot: hang a 22 in eyeball foil balloon behind your little reaper for a spooky backdrop.
  • Toxic or neon theme: the fluorescent green suits slime, zombie or neon costume ideas.

School parades and events often have their own costume prop rules, so check before the day. Our guide to costume prop rules lists what to ask.

Frequently asked questions

Does this scythe light up?

No. It has no LED, battery or switch. The green blade has a glow-in-the-dark finish that gives off a faint glimmer after it has been exposed to strong light.

How do I make the scythe glow?

Hold the blade under a bright lamp or in sunlight for a while, then move into a dark space. The glow is faint and fades over time, so recharge it between outings.

What age is this scythe for?

It is sized for kids, but it has small parts and is not for children under 3. Adults can use it too if they want a compact handheld prop.

How long is the scythe?

28.5 in (72 cm) assembled, with a 13 in (33 cm) blade. It is the shortest scythe in our costume prop range.

Is it heavy?

No. It is hollow plastic and weighs 4.2 oz (119 g).

What comes in the package?

One green sickle top and two black handle poles that screw together. Anything else you see in product photos, such as the costume, a flashlight, a bag or display props, is not part of the package.

Can kids play fight with it?

No. It is made for costume poses and photos and should never be used to hit anyone. Encourage dramatic poses instead.
