What is this nurse badge reel?

It is a retractable badge reel: a small housing with a nylon cord inside, a decorative face on the front and a clip on the back. You clip it to your scrub top, pocket or waistband, attach your ID card to the clear snap strap, and pull the card out when you need to scan it. When you let go, the cord winds back in and the card returns to the reel.

The face is white scalloped acrylic, 1.61 in (about 4.1 cm) across, with a smiling flower in the center and the words "Focus on the Good" in colorful letters. It is meant as a small, cheerful detail on a work uniform, and it also makes your reel easier to recognize on a break-room counter.

How far does the cord reach?

The nylon cord extends up to 25 in (about 64 cm). That is enough to hold a card up to a door reader, a medication cabinet or a time clock while the reel stays clipped at your hip or chest. If you often scan at a reader that sits higher or farther away, clip the reel to your chest pocket rather than your waistband so the card has less distance to travel.

How do you attach it?

• To clothing: the back has an alligator clip that rotates, so you can clip it to a scrub pocket, a collar edge or a belt and still turn the face upright.
• To a lanyard: you can clip the reel onto a lanyard if you prefer wearing your card around your neck. The lanyard itself is not included.
• To your card: the clear snap strap opens and closes around the slot in a standard punched ID or access card. It can hold a key instead of a card.

The connection between the clip and the reel also rotates, which helps the face sit straight when you clip it at an angle.

Before you buy: check your card

The snap strap needs a card with a punched slot or hole. If your employer issues cards without a slot, you will need a separate rigid card sleeve or a slot punch; this reel does not include either. This is also a clip-on reel, not a neck lanyard and not a card holder, so it will not protect the card face from scratches.

Care and everyday wear

Let the cord retract slowly rather than snapping back from full length, which is easier on the spring and the card. Wipe the acrylic face with a soft, slightly damp cloth if it gets marked. Avoid pulling the card sideways at a sharp angle against the housing, since that rubs the cord.
