What is this wire brush for?

If you are shopping for wire brushes for cleaning rust, flaking paint and stubborn grime off hard surfaces, this is a compact hand brush built for that. Stainless steel bristles are set in a dense 8 x 20 pattern on a silicone-covered handle about 6 in (15.5 to 16 cm) long, and the brush weighs 65 g (2.3 oz). The small head is made for spot work: tools, grill parts, car parts, cracks in concrete, brick joints and grout lines.

Using a wire brush on concrete and brick

On concrete and brick, stiff steel bristles loosen what a nylon brush slides over: flaking paint, rust staining sitting on the surface, and dirt packed into joints. The bristles flex enough to reach into cracks and crevices. Keep in mind it's a mechanical cleaner, not a chemical paint remover for concrete or a rust remover that dissolves stains. Paint that is still firmly bonded, or a stain that has soaked into the concrete, may need a cleaner made for that job once you've brushed off the loose material.

Removing rust from metal

For rusty tools, hardware, outdoor furniture and car parts, brush in short strokes until you reach sound metal, then wipe off the dust. That's the usual first step before repainting metal. Steel bristles can mark soft metals such as aluminum and brass, chrome, and polished or painted finishes you want to keep, so try a hidden spot first. When you're working on car parts in the garage, a roll of color-coded electrical tape is handy for labeling wires before you disconnect them.

On a grill, the brush scrubs rust from grates and other parts. Afterward, wipe the cooking surface with a damp cloth and look closely for loose bristles before you cook.

Handle and storage

The handle pairs blue silicone with red textured grip zones for a steady hold, and it has a built-in hook for hanging. The open bristle layout rinses clean and dries quickly once it is hung up. For other workshop and garage basics, browse tools and hardware.

Safety tips

Wear safety glasses and work gloves. Wire brushing throws off rust flakes, paint chips and the occasional loose bristle. If you're brushing old paint in a US home built before 1978, test it for lead first, because dry brushing can turn lead paint into dust. Rinse the brush after each use, shake it out and hang it to dry.

Frequently asked questions

Does this wire brush fit a drill?

No. It's a hand brush with a silicone handle and no shank, so it can't go in a drill chuck. Drill-mounted wire wheels and cup brushes are a separate tool.

Can it remove paint from concrete?

It removes loose and flaking paint, and the stiff stainless bristles reach into rough texture and cracks. Paint that is still firmly bonded, or large painted areas, usually also need a stripper or a pressure washer.

Will it get rust stains off concrete?

It lifts loose rust and staining that sits on the surface. Rust that has soaked into the concrete usually needs a rust-stain cleaner made for masonry after brushing.

Are the bristles stainless steel?

Yes. The bristles are stainless steel in a dense 8-row layout, made for wet and dry use. Rinse and hang the brush after use so it dries.

Will a steel wire brush scratch surfaces?

It can. Steel bristles may mark aluminum, brass, chrome, glazed tile and finishes you want to keep. Test a hidden spot first and use light pressure on anything you aren't refinishing.

How big is the brush?

About 6 in (15.5 to 16 cm) long and 65 g (2.3 oz). It's sized for detail areas, edges and crevices, not for grinding down large flat surfaces.

Can I use it on a BBQ grill?

Yes, to scrub rust off grill grates and parts. Afterward, wipe the grates with a damp cloth and check for loose bristles before cooking.
